Sarah Horlock is an archaeologist turned potter based in Norwich. Her inspiration comes from patterns and landscapes in archeological scans and enjoys experimenting with her ceramic practice by using techniques such as raku to fire her ceramics.
A wheel-thrown candlestick made from a stoneware clay and hand decorated. From Sarah’s collection of work inspired by archaeological excavation and the subtleties of form and hidden surfaces. Using a water-etching, where the clay is eroded with water and pressure, to produce a surface reminiscent of archaeological and geological deposits. Glimpses of these patterns continue onto the surrounding surface, marked out by an exposed line of unglazed clay.
